The Little Wins

Continued from previous post Baseline Scan: Cysts and Setbacks

Two months had dragged by since my first (unsuccessful) attempt at freezing my eggs. Thanks to work, I had to wait two whole months before giving it another shot, which felt like forever (cue dramatic music as I battled with my anxiety over the ticking biological clock). But somehow, time flew by, and suddenly, there I was, ready for my period and scheduling another baseline scan with the clinic.

Operation: Self-Preservation.

This time around, I switched to ‘self-preservation’ mode. My ovaries and I have a long history with cysts and I was honestly terrified of hearing the same old bad news. I had to channel my inner zen master and stay calm going into the scan.

When the nurse started the scan, she turned the screen away like it was some top-secret mission and said she'd be quiet for a moment. Then, she dropped the bombshell: “it’s good news!” No cysts and 7 – 8 follicles in sight! Cue the waterworks. I couldn't hold back the tears.

Sweet, Sweet Relief!

The relief was immense, and I was over the moon to get the green light to proceed. It’s funny how excited I was, even though it was just a green light to start the hormone stimulation part. But hey, I decided to party over this little win, which felt like a massive victory to me!

Let's Roll!

That evening, I practically skipped home, eager to watch the injection tutorial, devour the instruction leaflet, and gear up for my first self-injection of ovulation-stimulating medication (check out my previous post Information Overload for more details).

Needles don’t scare me, so the injection process wasn't an issue for me. I had to inject the medication into my tummy every evening between 19:30 and 21:00. Picking a time is crucial since you have to stick to it like glue. I chose 19:30, leaving me free to do whatever I wanted afterwards.

Before starting, I was a bit jittery about the hormone injections. I wasn’t sure if they’d turn me into an emotional rollercoaster. Thankfully, I felt perfectly fine, both physically and emotionally. Of course, this is my journey, and everyone’s experience may differ, but chatting with others who’ve been through it, they had similar tales to tell.

What’s Next?

Next up was adding the morning injection on Day 5, followed by an ultrasound scan on Day 7 to see how my follicles were partying with the hormones.

Having reached this point, I took a moment to bask in the fact that I was on the right path. I crossed all my fingers and toes, hoping the scan would go well and I’d move on to the Egg Retrieval stage!
